BOOK REVIEW BY A MIDDLE SCHOOLER

Excellent job on UP on a Midnight Sun: A Poodle’s Adoption Story by Ginger Mance. Ginger Mance did a wonderful job portraying figurative language in this novella. For example, the title, UP on a Midnight Sun is figurative language in that it goes beyond its literal meaning. Alalade’s journey really touched my heart when I learned all of what the miniature poodle went through as a young puppy. For example, Alalade tells the story of how he was given up. The strongest aspect of UP on a Midnight Sun is the bond between Alalade and Ginger. Ginger hired dog trainers, whisperers and other canine healers in order to help Alalade overcome his painful past. Overall, this was a very strong book that I would recommend to middle schoolers and above.

Alalade’s tale shows the possibilities that anyone can self-actualize and overcome obstacles through self-growth and dreams that envision one’s self-defined identity and worth. Up on a Midnight Sun: A Poodle’s Adoption Story by, Ginger Mance, is that ladder offered to all who long to climb from degradation to meaningful existence. This work is the jewel all should own.
